Momentums keep you rolling fat and feeling the fun of going fast. They are:
- 72mm tall
- 65mm wide
- Offset, with a square front lip and beveled on the inside
- 78a or 86a SP thane
If you've ever ridden a wheel 60 or more millimeters wide, you know how cushy and smooth it is. It's like the vibrations we're accustomed to feeling just go away. Suddenly we find ourselves unphased by the rough spots and cracks we used to dodge, and put more thought into how to smang the perfect line instead. Drifts feel supported and solid and hard turning is less sketchy. Here's the deal with Momentums though- they're poured with the same silky thane as SP's freeride wheels, so they certainly slide. Skinned, they make the same grippy DH wheel as other beefy options, but once that skin sheds it's a whole new ball game. They make a great beginner DH option, as well as take squatters to a place we've never seen before. Having a wheel that wide and is still freeridable give you the confidence to impress Ma by not using your hands.
We gave these babies a test up in some NY back country and found out for ourselves what a blast they are. Having ridden similarly shaped wheels, we were surprised and delighted by our new-found abilities to hit those heelside drifts, no hands necessary.
